In the language of the early aboriginal inhabitants of the region, ‘Coobara’ means place of native birds – a fitting name for this family owned vineyard situated alongside the Cromer conservation park in the northern reaches of the Adelaide Hills.
Established in 1992 by David Cook and his family, this 12 hectare vineyard is based on sandy-loam soils over a clay base. David applied some eighteen years experience in the industry working alongside such notables as Jim Irvine, Robin Day, John Glaetzer and the late Neil Ashmead to the establishment of this boutique operation, and his hands-on approach coupled to a desire for perfection has borne exciting results.
Since his first release of a varietal Merlot from just the 2004 vintage, the Coobara stable of wines has gone on to set a new bench-mark for quality in the region and, indeed, the state.
Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Riesling are grown on the property, providing David with the most noble of traditional varieties from which to craft his wines.
The small volume produced from this hand-tended vineyard means that the wines are highly sought after and often sell-out soon after release.
